What is Transitional Housing?

Transitional housing provides apartments, supportive services and a stable environment to homeless families who are working to improve or develop the skills necessary to live self-sufficiently. This is typically defined by a one-year time period. Under 1 Roof works with local faith-based and community action groups that provide mentors and essential financial support. Who does Under 1 Roof serve?

Under 1 Roof housing programs are geared to serve extremely low and moderate income families who have become homeless due to reasons such as divorce, domestic violence, loss of employment, and health issues. We also serve homeless families that have an extensive history or current substance abuse problem, criminal history or chronic disability. Under 1 Roof is not a shelter!

How long has Under 1 Roof been around?

The concept of providing services to the homeless in Dallas/Collin County began in 2010 when Verna Jones and Vanessa Ousley, were motivated to provide services to assist homeless individuals, families and children. Since then, Under1 Roof has expanded its services too include: career counseling, educational tutoring for adults and children, legal counseling, financial management skill, and life-skills mentoring all of these services are taught by our volunteers.

How can I donate to help a family out and how are donations spent? Under 1 Roof benefits from the generosity of an ever growing number of people, businesses, churches and organizations. While the reasons for giving are as varied as their interests and financial circumstances, all share common desire to provide hope, dignity and a brighter future for homeless families receiving our services.

All donations received by Under 1 Roof go to providing items that will make our program participants feel they have a home to go to. Our concept is not just to give them a roof with four walls, but to give them a home that they feel safe and comfortable in returning to.

What are the goals of Under 1 Roof Housing Programs?

As a non-profit organization, Under 1 Roof strives to: Inspire and affect change by advocating for homeless families. Provide services and opportunities that connect families to a better future. Collaborate with faith-based partners, partner agencies, community action groups and businesses to leverage resources and create long-term solutions. Lead by example through innovative program and grassroots involvement.

What is the meaning of an “invisible” homeless person?

For many Americans, the word “homeless” evokes a mental image of a single male with some type of substance abuse or mental health problem loitering in a public place. This is the image of the invisible homeless. In reality, the picture of homelessness in America today is a family portrait. Under 1 Roof serves the homeless family- the “invisible” homeless. Typically, this is a single parent with children in school that are bouncing from home-to-home of family and friends.

Two trends largely responsible for the rise in family homelessness over the past several years:

  1. A growing shortage of affordable rental housing
  2. A simultaneous increase in poverty.

How to obtain housing with Under 1 Roof:

In order to obtain housing with Under 1 Roof you MUST be residing in one of the local shelters and referred by shelter case manager. You must have proof of homelessness on agency letterhead. U1R does not take walk-ins. Additional questions please contact Under 1 Roof staff at (214) 343-4000.

What is the process an individual or family goes through before being accepted into Under 1 Roof’s Housing Programs?

When an individual or family is referred to Under 1 Roof for services, they are carefully screened and, once found eligible, the family is provided with safe affordable housing, and all of the services offered by the agency. After intake, an Individual Service Plan (ISP) is written exclusively to meet the need of that particular program participant.

What is the key to a family’s success in Under 1 Roof?

Under 1 Roof is an organization about caring and being change agents. Each person involved in our Housing Programs will experience change. Each program participant must have the desire and willingness to work hard to create long-term change that will give them the skills to be financially independent which will allow for stable housing and a brighter future for the whole family. Volunteer mentors are at the heart of the Under 1 Roof Housing Programs. Mentors will experience a change in their own views on poverty and family homelessness. Every party must have an open heart and a willingness to work hard.
